I'm so addicted to guitar making that I'm thinking of selling one of my treasured Martin guitars to buy some new equipment.

Anyone know where I can get a value for it? It's a 1992 00-18 and is in mint condition.

vintage guitar magazine may have some info, or call gruhns or mandolin bros or the like and ask them. they could tell you what the market is if they choose to.

I have the 6th edition of the blue book at the office with me (read: not the latest one). And it is showing the 00-18 from 92

Excellent = $1,100
Average = $750

I think you have to wait more than 13 years for the value of a Martin to appreciate. They have become very popular guitars. I've noticed that during the past ten years or so, many more guitar shops are carrying Martin. You can even buy one through Musicians Friend now. I know I wanted to sell my two Martins, but I wouldn't get anywhere near the Blue Book value. There are just too many of them on the market now. Martin built its 500,000th guitar in 1989, now they are well over 1,000,000.

BTW if you sell to a store, expect to get 50% of the Blue Book value. If you sell at consignment, expect 75% of value.

I think one of the factors has to do with how many there are in the marketplace. Maybe they sold a ton of them.

Another factor could be how much they are selling for (new) today.

Also, Martin doesn't enjoy the reputation/market share it once did. With all these "other" big guys(like Taylor) putting out such beauty's it's getting harder and harder to get a decent dollar for a "factory" guitar. Especially used.

the appreciation in guitar values doesn't tke place for a long while unless there is association with a musical "name", an event etc. new factory instruments sell at a significant discount below list, and like automobiles they begin depreciating before you carry it out the door.
